Saturday 31st October is the next all-day three supermarket Lewes Food Banks collection, and Lewes branch of the Labour Party will be playing our part, come along and join in, all welcome!
We will be collecting all day, but nobody does more than a single one hour ‘shift‘ – at Lewes Aldi, Tesco and Waitrose. The 31st is also the day furlough ends, reducing financial support to 22% of earnings for those unable to work because of the virus. This will pile the pressure on our community as firms close and redundancies mount up. A Nightmare on Every Street
We can all do our bit to help provide in these hard times with what many of us take for granted, food. If in Lewes this collection helps ensure the food banks can provide for the first three weeks of November all the ingredients for three decent meals a day it’s a massive boost. Last month that target was met, 4406 items of food and household goods. Can you help the collection do so again?
Through the day the team of helpers will provide shoppers with a shopping list of the goods the food banks most need. The request to shoppers is to add just one additional purchase from the list to their shop and donate to the stall outside the stores. And between 12-2pm some very scary looking helpers will specifically collect Halloween treats including hot chocolate and cocoa, biscuits and cakes, jams and spreads. None of us eat simply to survive but as an act of pleasure too. Don’t allow the virus and austerity to rob any in our community of that.
Please do register to staff the collections and stalls. The aim is to have enough helpers so that nobody needs to help for more than an hour, once registered you’ll be sent a rota with options for your one hour shift.
